People have been adorning their bodies with gold jewelry for thousands of years. The Sumerian Civilization, based in what is now Iraq, used gold to create rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets as early as 2500 BC. From that point on, gold has always been a staple in jewelry boxes.
Gold comes in a variety of purities, as indicated by karats. Most jewelry is at least 10K gold, which is slightly more than 41 percent gold. There is also 14K gold, which is slightly more than 58 percent gold, and 18K, which is 75 percent gold. There are higher €" and even more pure €" levels of gold, like 22K, which is 91.6 percent pure gold, and 24 K, which is 99.9 percent gold. But these golds are too soft to be used in jewelry. Most jewelry sold in the United States today is 14K gold. It is a beautiful gold and one that is strong enough to withstand daily wear.
Rings
Today, rings are often adorned with stones for an even more beautiful piece of jewelry. You expect to find a diamond set in gold, but how about these other options:
How about 1.50ct of yellow and white diamonds set in polished 14K yellow gold? This beautiful ring has 24 round cut and enhanced yellow diamonds in prong settings. They are surrounded by 36 full, round cut white diamonds. The setting is inch by 13/16 of an inch, and a inch high. The ring offers a creative combination of stones that really stand out.
Another variation on this theme is a 14K rose gold ring with one morganite and multiple diamonds. Morganite is a pink gemstone that is a variety of beryl. The combination of this pink stone set in rose gold is a most unusual, but striking ring. Whereas the ring above featured 60 stones, this ring features one oval cut, 6.00 ct morganite stone, surrounded by 60 round 1mm diamonds, each in a prong setting. The total diamond weight is 0.46ct.
Like the coat of many colors, the Mystic Topaz and multi-gemstone ring bears the colors of the rainbow. Choose the look you want with either a rose gold or yellow gold setting. At the center of the ring is one oval cut, 3.25ct Mystic topaz stone in a prong setting. (A Mystic topaz is a real topaz that has been coated with a film that adds the rich rainbow colors.) On either side of the Mystic topaz are a variety of pave, round cut 2mm gemstones, including eight blue sapphires, three tsavorites (a variety of garnets), three yellow sapphires, six pink sapphires and three rubies.
If you just want to enjoy a gold ring without stones, you will be amazed by the Electroform Dolce Bouquet Ring done in 14K yellow gold. The ring resembles a wedding bouquet of individual flowers, giving it a domed effect. If you are not familiar with electroform, it is a rather new jewelry technique that creates hollow jewelry. The benefit is a much more lightweight, seamless piece of jewelry. This ring is part of the Italian Gold with Stefano Collection.
Necklaces
There is no richer look than a beautiful gold necklace draping your throat. From a single chain to a golden rope woven from several chains, gold necklaces are a classic look.
Start simple with a single strand gold necklace, like the 14K gold, 20-inch Oro Mirror Chain necklace. Made using diamond cut 14K yellow gold, this necklace catches the light in a million ways. Measuring a generous 20 inches long, it will stand alone well or can carry a pendant. Weighing at least 1.0 gram, this necklace is also part of the Stefano Collection.
Not satisfied by a single strand of gold? Enjoy the lush 18-inch Settebella Multi-Strand Torchon necklace. It comes in white or yellow gold. It was created using a process called Silicoro, which combines silicone with 2.4 grams of gold. The result is a 15.2 gram necklace that measures inch at its widest point. This technology gives you a lightweight, but very durable necklace at an affordable price. This luscious necklace is also part of the Stefano Silicoro Collection.
For an even richer look, consider the 14K Tuscan Sun Grumette 18-inch necklace. It is made of intertwined links of polished, textured and hammered 14K yellow gold for a shimmering and bold look. It measures 5/8 of an inch wide, yet is still lightweight, since it was created using a hollow process. It has a spring ring clasp. This too is part of the Italian Designs with Stefano Collection.
While silver jewelry may come in and out of fashion, gold jewelry remains a standard for every jewelry box. That's what we call the gold standard.
